Did you know...

  • The Rumba is the oldest of the Latin American dances. Its name is derived from the Spanish word “rumbear,” which means “to have fun” or “to go to a party.” Variations of this dance are called the Son, Danzon, Guagira, Guaracha and Naningo. Dance historians believe that African slaves invented the dance soon after they were brought to Cuba, possibly as early as the 1500s.
  • The Hustle is a catchall name for several disco dances which were extremely popular in the 1970s. Today it mostly refers to the unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs to disco music.  It has some features in common with swing dances. Its basic steps are somewhat similar to the Discofox, which emerged at about the same time and is more familiar in various European countries. In the 1970s there was also a line dance called the Hustle—which is regaining popularity as people throw 1970s theme parties or schools have 1970s dance performances. Modern partner hustle is sometimes referred to as New York Hustle.
  • Tango is a dance, music and poetry that originated in Buenos Aires at the turn of the century, developing in the melting pot of cultures that was Buenos Aires in the late 19th century.  By 1910 the rich sons of Argentina were making their way to Paris, center of the cultural and entertainment world. They introduced the tango into a society eager for innovation, and not entirely averse to the risqué nature of this import, especially as taught by the dashing, rich latin boys who brought it. In 1913 the Tango had spread from St Petersburg to New York, not without controversy, and had become an international phenomena, even if its heart was still on the Rio de la Plata and the cities of Buenos Aries and Montevideo.
